Mine Water and Wastewater Treatment Solutions

Mine water and wastewater treatment solutions from Veolia Water Technologies South Africa (Veolia) help mining companies in South Africa and Africa reduce their effects on the environment with economical mine process water and wastewater treatment technologies.

Mine Process Water and Wastewater Treatment

Our mine water treatment technologies are tailored for industrial use. These technologies and Veolia’s chemicals help to:

  • Produce process water for mining activities
  • Extract minerals from water streams
  • Re-use process water
  • Treat mine sludge

Veolia Water Technologies South Africa custom-builds mine water treatment systems to match the specific requirements of mining applications, whether mining for gold, nickel and copper mining, to uranium, coal, or other minerals. Water solutions have successfully helped mining companies across the globe to refine minerals, reduce waste, limit pollution, and drive profitability.

Pre-treatment technology:

  • Groundwater, surface water, grey water treatment
  • Seawater desalination
  • Pipeline design and supply
  • Process water re-use

Leach liquor filtration technology:

  • Precious metals and minerals can be recovered from leach streams and other process water

Process mine water treatment technology:

  • Removal of pollutants such as heavy metals, suspended solids, arsenic, cyanide, iron, selenium, chromium, manganese, and various others.
  • Moving towards zero liquid discharge

Tailings pond management technology:

  • Dewatering and drying
  • Water recovery and re-use
  • Discharge legislation compliance
  • Positive mine water balance control and management

Case studies

AngloGold Ashanti Project - Ghana

  • Mine water treatment (process wastewater)
  • Water re-use

Veolia completed an installation of the patented Actiflo™ clarification plant - the first of its kind on the African continent. The main requirement of the project was to provide an effective means of improving the quality of process wastewater to allow for re-use in the metallurgical beneficiation process at the company's Obuasi mine.

Veolia provided and commissioned three Actiflo™ mine water treatment plants, six sectional tanks, as well as various dosing systems. The company also supplied the mine with consumable chemicals on an on-going basis.

Platinum mine wastewater treatment plant

  • Mine wastewater treatment (sewage)

Veolia provided a mine wastewater treatment plant for a 2 000-man mining camp through its Namibian subsidiary, Aqua Services & Engineering. The system utilises the new generation trickling filter technology, developed specifically for the African environment, and offers many advantages over alternative treatments, including simplified operation, robustness and most importantly, low operating and maintenance costs.

Equinox, Lumwana Project - Zambia

  • Potable water supply
  • Sewage water treatment

Veolia supplied this copper mine with a plant for drinking water and a plant for wastewater treatment. The potable water treatment plant uses clarification processes, followed by sand filtration and activated carbon filtration to produce water for use and consumption by mine workers. The mine wastewater treatment plant utilises Bio-disk technologies that are ideal for raw sewage treatment.

Aflease - South Africa

  • Mine water treatment (process wastewater)
  • Sludge stream treatment

Veolia supplied the uranium mine with a demineralisation plant for the treatment of water used in mineral extraction processes. The main systems components for mine water treatment used here are activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis.

As part of a total mine water treatment solution, Veolia has a five-year financing, design, construction and commissioning contract with the Aflease project that includes the supply of all chemicals and other consumables.

Harmony Gold - South Africa

  • Mine water treatment (process wastewater)
  • Acid mine water treatment and drainage
  • Sludge stream treatment

Veolia supplied Harmony Gold with mine water treatment boilers for metallurgical operations. The company's Randfontein site is also maintained with chemicals and technical support from Veolia, where acid mine water has affecting the environment and surrounding communities.

Impala Platinum - Springs refinery

  • Mine water treatment (process wastewater)
  • Sludge stream treatment

Veolia continually supplies chemicals and technical support to on-site reverse osmosis membranes. Mine water treatment expertise from Veolia helps this operation reduce expenditures, while having positive effects on the environment.

BHP Billiton, Hillside Aluminium Smelter - Richards Bay

  • Mine water treatment (process wastewater)

Veolia supplied a total mine wastewater treatment solution to this operation. The solution consists of cooling water treatment products, DAF (dissolved air flotation), and the continued supply of chemicals, namely flocculants and polymers.

The Veolia branch in Durban helps ensure the plant operates with optimised circuits at minimal costs.

Simmer & Jack - Ezulweni Mine

  • Mine water treatment (process wastewater)
  • Sludge stream treatment
  • Water re-use

Veolia supplied a total mine water treatment solution to this operation. The solution includes the supply of cooling water treatment products, mine water treatment and clarification products (pH control and flocculants). Permanent on-site technical teams monitor and administer products into the mine water treatment systems.

Better water management, enabled by Veolia, has facilitated large-scale cost savings associated with labour and underground water use.
