Containerised Sewage Treatment Plants
Containerised sewage treatment plants from Veolia Water Technologies South Africa (Veolia) are designed for onsite plug n play operations making them ideal for remote locations, mining camps, holiday resorts, practically anywhere that lacks the infrastructure for brick and mortar plants. The final effluent produced complies with the RSA General Standard for Discharge.
Forming part of Veolia’s mobile water treatment services, containerised sewage treatment plants (CSTPs) are fully functional sewage treatment plants packaged in modular, easy transportable, robust, containers. They can be transported via road, sea or rail to any destination in Africa, are reliable, adaptable and have low maintenance requirements.
CONTAINERISED SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS FEATURES AND BENEFITS
- Ease of operation
- Modular design allows expansion
- Quick installation and start up
- Low operating expenditure
- Small footprint
- Low energy consumption
- Discharge quality to environmental standards
- Fully automated

Uniquely South African, Veolia’s CSTPs are pre-assembled and factory acceptance tested (FAT) in Veolia’s Sebenza workshop in Johannesburg East. As they are a cost-effective, compact and reliable sewage treatment solution that provides maximum environmental compliance, they are also supplied into Africa – and globally where required.
Veolia’s Namibian-based subsidiary Aqua Services & Engineering (ASE) completed a containerised sewage treatment plant installation for 4 000 people in a Namibian township development. To read all the details, click here.
The modular design of Veolia’s CSTPs allows for easy plant expansion, and they can be redeployed or/and adapted as clients’ operational requirements change. Our full range of sewage treatment chemicals guarantees maximum operational performance!
Containerised Sewage Treatment Plants form part of Veolia’s Mobile Water Treatment Services, which includes Containerised Potable Water Treatment Plants and Mobile Water Treatment Plants.

Industries
These plants are suitable for mining camps and villages, small towns, temporary installations, schools, resorts, lodges and many more. Some of the industrieswhich benefit from CSTPs include:
- Tourism
- Agriculture
- Pulp and Paper
- Power and Mining
- Food and Beverage
- Military
HYDREX® CHEMICALS FOR SEWAGE TREATMENT
Hydrex® 6000 Wastewater Chemicals
Hydrex® 6000 sewage treatment chemicals include:
- Emulsions
- Organic & inorganic coagulants
- Powders & beads
Using this range of chemicals helps Veolia deliver state-of-the-art clarification and wastewater chemistry and application exposure for its clients.
Hydrex® 7000 Biocides
Biocides improve plant performance through the control of bacteria, fungi and algae growth in effluent and wastewater, reduce maintenance costs and minimise health risks. Veolia’s range includes:
- Oxidant or non-oxidant products
- Continuous action and shock treatment agents
- Rapid action / delayed reaction products
- Broad spectrum products
Hydrex® Biocides have a broad spectrum of activity and legionella control, and further applications in treating recycled, effluent or sewage water for reuse.
TRICKLING FILTER TECHNOLGOY
A key solution used in these modular sewage treatment plants is Veolia’s propriety trickling filter solution. This technology ensures that:
- Digestion processes recover easily after power outages
- Less sludge is produced
- Peak flows are easily accommodated
- Lower energy requirements
- Minimal routine maintenance
The trickling filter sewage treatment process

Pre-treatment that removes non-digestible particles using filtration techniques is the first step in trickling filter technology. Subsequently, sewage enters an anaerobic reactor which breaks down all organic particles, which are removed from the water using ultra-compact clarification technology. This leaves the water ready for chlorination or ultraviolet disinfection.
HYBRID SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS
As there are various containerised sewage treatment plant design configurations, means Veolia also supplies hybrid sewage treatment systems, which consists of the civil septic tank and the fully containerised system.
EQUIPMENT USED
All of Veolia’s equipment and products meet strict quality control standards, including NSF, SABS, ISO, ASME, ANSI and AWS. These products include pressure vessels, pumps, motors, membranes, instrumentation, valves and chemicals, among others.
