Nanofiltration is used to soften and remove organic matter and synthetic organic matter in water with low total dissolved solids.
Recent developments in NF technology have allowed Veolia to replace the higher energy-using reverse osmosis (RO) membranes in many applications, helping clients lower the cost of their water treatment.
It addition to lower power consumption, NF is ideal for processing large and continuous volumes of water, with pore sizes nominally ~1 nm retaining ions and low molecular weight organics. Nanofiltration applications typically require between 3 to 30 bar pressure.

The science behind NF
With NF falling between ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis, NF membrane technology allow ions to be separated by both size and electrical activity (such as a fixed charge developed by dissociation of groups like sulphonated or carboxyl acids) as well as ion interaction.
